Interesting Information About Ukrainian Village

Ukrainian Village is located in the West Town community and has one of the largest Ukranian populations in the U.S. and is home to approximately 15,000 ethnic Ukrainians. Its boundaries are Division to the north, Grand to the south, Western to the west and Damen to the east.

Ukrainian Village began as farmland. Originally, German Americans formed the largest ethnic group in the area. Ukrainians started settling here because of their familiarity with Polish people who lived in Polish Downtown. When the elevated train was constructed in 1895 along Paulina Ave, the population grew, as the train provided access to workplaces.

This area has been the focus of Ukrainian life since  the beginning of the 20th century. It has three Ukrainian churches, Ukrainian-owned financial institutions, a Ukrainian-language grammar school, the Ukrainian National Museum, a Ukrainian Cultural Center, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Ukrainian youth organizations, and Ukrainian-owned restaurants, stores and businesses.

Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building.
