Interesting Information About Lake Bluff

The first settler arrived about 1836. In 1837, William and Mary Dwyer claimed the land just north of the former Central School and they started a stage coach stop and tavern along the Green Bay Trail.

In 1855, the first railroad through Lake County was completed, it ran from Chicago to the county line. Henry Ostrander donated the land for the Rockland depot was built. The area, known previously as the Dwyer Settlement and Oak Hill, became Rockland.

In 1875, a group of Methodist ministers purchased 100 acres of lakefront property and formed The Lake Bluff Camp Meeting Association, renaming the area to "Lake Bluff." which refers to the prominent bluff overlooking Lake Michigan.

The Association built a resort for religious, social, cultural, educational and recreational programs. The Camp Meeting brought in well-known personalities of the time, including  Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes and Frances Willard. Lake Bluff was considered a summer colony, because most of the residents were seasonal. In addition to the Lake Michigan beach, Lake Bluff has a 10-acre lake in the center of town, called Artesian Lake. Land in the Association was divided into 25-foot lots where  a cottage could be built for $250. The Bluff Lodge, the town's first of more than 30 hotels, was opened in 1876.

Each summer Lake Bluff hosts "Bluffinia" a series of concerts with bands from all over the United States, playing everything from 1920's music to Rock to Pop. Bluffinia is the second most attended concert series in Lake County behind Ravinia.
