WickRight President, Owner and lead moisture repair specialist, Bob Kelly spent the first 10 years of his career mastering fine carpentry and historic preservation in the North Shore suburbs. Bob provided high-end remodeling as well. But more importantly, this is where he honed his inventor skills by fabricating specialized parts for historic homes that couldn't be found easily in building supply stores. Net, net, Bob knows historic homes and buildings. If your historic, older or new home or building has moisture intrusion issues, Bob will find the source and fix it.

Since 2012, Bob has evaluated over 400 buildings around Chicagoland. Of those 400 buildings, WickRight Passive Ventilation® has been installed on over 107 buildings, including single family, multi-family and commercial buildings. All of those buildings are now dry or in the process of drying. Click to read testimonials about the quality of our work and courteous crews, as well as the performance of our venting and flashing products.

One of the testimonials is from a project that we did in Des Plaines, 5 years ago. A 30-unit condo building was experiencing leaking in multiple spots and nasty smells wafting throughout the building. Several contractors had evaluated the property, no one had a clue as to where the moisture and smells were coming from. WickRight teamed up with BTC - Building Technology Consultants - and did water testing, as well as a roof investigation and masonry discovery. We found flaws at the roof level.

Currently we have four projects in progress in Chicago and on the North Shore. One project includes building a 365 Construction Tent, to protect the interior of the building while structural improvements are made. We also have a large-scale project in progress on the North Shore, repairing severe moisture intrusion damage on a home with a stucco exterior and a window repair and masonry sealant project in Evanston.

Interesting Information About Morton Grove

Morton Grove is named after former United States Vice President Levi Parsons Morton, who helped finance the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad and established a stop at the old Miller's Mill. Miller's Mill Road, now Lincoln Avenue, connected the riverside sawmill to what is now Niles Center, or Skokie.

English farmers settled in the Morton Grove area in the early 1830s, even though there were no real roads from Chicago, only native American trails. Farmers from Germany and Luxembourg cleared the land. The walnut, oak, hickory, elm and maple logs were hauled to a sawmill at Dutchman's Point, now Niles.

In 1841, John Miller erected a water-powered sawmill on the Chicago River near what is now Dempster Street. This simplified homebuilding in the area, as well as facilitated lumber sales to Niles, Skokie and ultimately Chicago.

Around 1850, the "Northwestern" road, now Milwaukee Avenue, was improved using lumber from Miller's sawmill to become a single lane plank road, which reduced a four-day journey to Chicago to about a half day. Reducing the commute to Chicago increased sales of produce and farm products to Chicago residents. Lumber was also hauled to Jefferson Park to fuel locomotives.

The first greenhouses were built in Morton Grove in 1885 by the Poehlman Brothers for their floral business. Approximately 135,000 tons of coal were transported the their business annually to heat the greenhouses each winter. The Poehlman Brothers' floral business grew into one of the world’s largest floral firms, receiving international recognition when one of its roses won first place at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. By 1915 the Poehlman Brothers' payroll included 400 to 500 people. Unfortunately, the business went bankrupt during in the Great Depression.

In 1897 Morton Grove built a public school, this "little red schoolhouse" stood until 1990. The city installed a telephone exchange in 1900. In 1907 gas lines were installed. In 1911 North Shore Electric Light Company installed street lights. Morton Grove outlawed outhouses in 1920. Morton Grove's first bank was built in 1912 and a theater began showing silent movies in 1916.

In the 1920s during prohibition, Morton Grove was known for night clubs and speakeasies, including the Dells club, the Lincoln Tavern, the Light House and the Bit and Bridle. Since Evanston and Skokie were dry, Morton Grove's speakeasies drew visitors in limousines and cars from all over the North Shore.

Morton Grove, Illinois Masonry Maintenance

All buildings require maintenance. Masonry buildings may seem to be maintenance free because they last for hundreds of years. But make no mistake, to remain issue-free, safe and dry, masonry buildings need maintenance. Every 30 years or so, historic masonry buildings need to have the mortar ground out of the mortar joints and re-pointed with lime mortar. Masonry buildings built after 1950 need maintenance every 20 years or so, depending on the craftsmanship. But masonry buildings built since 1990 need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" which is brick-colored concrete and "Renaissance Stone" which is pre-cast concrete need maintenance more often than buildings constructed with common brick or buildings with a brick facade and block structural wall. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete maintenance services at reasonable prices in Morton Grove. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.

Morton Grove, IL – Masonry Sealant Applications

Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building. If your Morton Grove home is experiencing mysterious leaks, give WickRight General Contracting a call 312-720-1467. Your building may need parapet ventilation installed, custom flashings designed to divert bulk water and masonry sealant to help the mortar and the block resist moisture intrusion and wind driven rain. WickRight General Contracting installs masonry sealants, including clear sealants, like Chemtrete, Prosoco and various elastomeric paints, like Modac, sometimes called "plugger" paints.

Morton Grove, IL Split Face Block Repair

Some masonry buildings built in Morton Grove since 1990 are wet. These wet buildings need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion and to dry out. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick"  and "Renaissance Stone" need custom flashing and parapet ventilation to release moisture trapped in the building's walls and roof system. We recommend installing WickRight passive ventilation on buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block and Renaissance Stone or precast concrete. Buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block also need to be sealed with masonry sealant. Renaissance stone and pre-cast concrete are difficult to seal, so we suggest covering these details with sheet metal or designing custom flashings to divert water and rain away from these materials. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete repair services in Morton Grove at reasonable prices. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
