Some Interesting Info About the Near North Side...

Of Chicago's many communities, the Near North Side is one of the most densely populated area and has the second most skyscrapers in the city. It's also the oldest community and was originally called "Eschecagou." The Near North Side was established by Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in the 1780s .

The community has 6 neighborhoods: Magnificent Mile, Gold Coast, Old Town, Streeterville, River North and Goose Island.

The Gold Coast has luxury high-rise apartment towers and buildings and stone mansions. It has been home to the super-rich since before 1900. Around 1885, Potter Palmer, owner of the Palmer House hotel, built his castle on Lake Shore Drive. The "Gold Coast Historic District" is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The historic Old Town neighborhood is highly affluent with many of Chicago's older Victorian-era buildings remaining. St. Michael's Church, one of seven to survive the Great Chicago Fire, is located in Old Town. Many of the streets and alleys, predate the fire and are do not follow the city's grid pattern. In the 1930s, the area became known as an art colony and has remained connected to the art world ever since.

Goose Island is a 160 acre island separated from the mainland by the Chicago River on the west and the North Branch Canal on the east. Irish immigrants were the first to settled on the island, naming it Goose Island. Cars entry the island from the south only, but trains, bicycles, and pedestrians can reach the island via the train and the Cherry Avenue  pedestrian Bridge, from North Avenue to Goose Island. Seasonal access is available by Chicago Water Taxi. Kendall College's Riverworks campus is located on Goose Island.

River North is known for fine dining, galleries and nightlife, as well as the Merchandise Mart, the Wrigley Building and Marina City towers. At the turn of the 20th century, River North was known as Smokey Hollow, because the smoke from the factories was often so thick that it blocked the sunlight. River North was a transportation hub, with railroad tracks linking ports along the Chicago River to the surrounding areas. There are five districts within River North, including the gallery district, the cathedral district, the design district, Kingsbury Park and a tourist-oriented restaurant area.

Streeterville boasts some of Chicago's tallest skyscrapers and Northwestern University's Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Feinberg School of Medicine, School of Professional Studies, Kellogg School of Management's downtown campus, and School of Law.

The Magnificent Mile is the stretch of North Michigan Avenue between the Chicago River and Oak Street, that features luxury stores, restaurants, office buildings, hotels and the Chicago Tribune, as well as Chicago's Water Tower landmark and the Water Tower shopping center. Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building.
