The area is characterized by the prominent historical
boulevards, stately
greystones and large
bungalow-style homes. Logan Square is named for
General John A. Logan, an American soldier and politician.
One of the most beautiful intersections in the city, the Logan Square itself, is a large public green space (designed by architect William Le Baron Jenney, landscape architect Jens Jensen and others) formed as the grand northwest terminus of the Chicago Boulevard System and the junction of Kedzie and Logan Boulevards and Milwaukee Avenue. At the center of the square is the Illinois Centennial Monument, built in 1918 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Illinois' statehood.
The monument, designed by Henry Bacon, famed architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. and sculpted by Evelyn Beatrice Longman, is a single 70-foot tall "Tennessee-pink" marble Doric column, based upon the same proportions as the columns of the Parthenon in Ancient Greece, and topped by an eagle. Reliefs on the base depict Native Americans, explorers, Jesuit missionaries, farmers, and laborers to represent Illinois' contributions to the nation through transportation as a railroad crossroads for passengers and freight, education, commerce, grain and commodities, religion and exploration, along with the "pioneering spirit" during the state's first century.
Originally developed by early settlers like Martin Kimbell (Kimball Avenue) in the 1830s, many of its early residents were English, Norwegians or Danes. Milwaukee Avenue, which spans the community, traces its origins prior to 1830 as a Native American trail and became known as "Northwest Plank Road" when it was constructed with wooden boards in 1849.
Milwaukee Avenue was finally paved in 1911 to accommodate motor cars. A baseball stadium at the corner of Milwaukee and Diversey hosted the Logan Square Baseball Club, which defeated both the
Chicago Cubs and
White Sox, who had just played each other in the crosstown
1906 World Series.
Today, the neighborhood is home to a diverse population including Latino and Eastern Europeans, as well as a growing number of Millennials, due to gentrification. Additionally, the increase in housing costs in nearby Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, and the other Lakefront communities has led to many of Chicago's aspiring artists and restaurateurs to move to Logan Square.
Residents are attracted to the community for its beautiful park-like boulevards, part of Chicago's 26-mile Chicago park and boulevard system. Known as the "Logan Square Boulevards District", the area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and became a protected Chicago Landmark in 2005. Additional development includes the partnerships between residents and the city to support the Comfort Station at Logan Square, the Bloomingdale Trail, Logan Plaza, The Green Exchange and Chicago Printed String Building, along with the preservation of numerous historic buildings.

WickRight General Contracting offers excellent masonry, brick, block, split face block, concrete block, and stone services, as well as glass block repair services at reasonable prices in the Logan Square neighborhood. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate from an expert. If your masonry walls are cracking, you may need ventilation installed on your parapets to release moisture vapor. The capstones, metal copings or clay tiles on top of your parapet walls may be leaking, causing the parapet walls to become wet and leak into your home. The mortar in your masonry walls may need tuckpointing or re-pointing. Your building may have shifted and the expansion joints need to be repaired. Give us a call and have a building evaluation performed so you can keep your building dry and plan for any necessary repairs. We also repair and replace glass block.
All buildings require maintenance. Masonry buildings may seem to be maintenance free because they last for hundreds of years. But make no mistake, to remain issue-free, safe and dry, masonry buildings need maintenance. Every 30 years or so, historic masonry buildings need to have the mortar ground out of the mortar joints and re-pointed with lime mortar. Masonry buildings built after 1950 need maintenance every 20 years or so, depending on the craftsmanship. But masonry buildings built since 1990 need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" which is brick-colored concrete and "Renaissance Stone" which is pre-cast concrete need maintenance more often than buildings constructed with common brick or buildings with a brick facade and block structural wall. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete maintenance services at reasonable prices in Logan Square. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building. If your Logan Square home is experiencing mysterious leaks, give WickRight General Contracting a call 312-720-1467. Your building may need parapet ventilation installed, custom flashings designed to divert bulk water and masonry sealant to help the mortar and the block resist moisture intrusion and wind driven rain. WickRight General Contracting installs masonry sealants, including clear sealants, like Chemtrete, Prosoco and various elastomeric paints, like Modac, sometimes called "plugger" paints.
Many masonry buildings built in the Logan Square neighborhood since 1990 are wet. These
wet buildings need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" which is brick-colored concrete and "Renaissance Stone" which is pre-cast concrete need ventilation to release moisture trapped in the building's walls and roof system. We recommend installing WickRight passive ventilation on buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block and Renaissance Stone or precast concrete. Buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block also need to be sealed with masonry sealant. Renaissance stone and pre-cast concrete are difficult to seal, so we suggest covering these details with sheet metal or designing custom flashings to divert water and rain away from these materials. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete repair services at reasonable prices. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
