The Loop is the central business district of downtown Chicago. It is the 2nd largest commercial business district in North America and contains headquarters and regional offices of many global and national businesses, retail establishments, restaurants, hotels, and theaters, and many of Chicago's most famous attractions.

Chicago's City Hall, government offices and consulates of foreign nations are located in The Loop. State and Madison Streets, is the origin of Chicago's street grid. Most of Grant Park is in the eastern section of The Loop, which is bordered on the north and west by the Chicago River, on the east by Lake Michigan, and on the south by Roosevelt.

Fort Dearborn, the first settlement in the area, was built in 1803 in the Loop by the United States' federal government. After the Great Chicago Fire, the character of the area switch from mixes use to commercial, boasting some of the world's earliest skyscrapers and starting the legacy of great architecture that continues today.

In the late 19th century cable car turnarounds and a prominent elevated railway loop encircled the area, giving the Loop its name. Starting in the 1920s many highways were constructed in the Loop, most prominently U.S. Route 66, which opened in 1926.

The Loop is dominated by offices and public buildings, its residential population boomed during the latter 20th century and first decades of the 21st.

All buildings require maintenance. Masonry buildings may seem to be maintenance free because they last for hundreds of years. But make no mistake, to remain issue-free, safe and dry, masonry buildings need maintenance. Every 30 years or so, historic masonry buildings need to have the mortar ground out of the mortar joints and re-pointed with lime mortar. Masonry buildings built after 1950 need maintenance every 20 years or so, depending on the craftsmanship. But masonry buildings built since 1990 need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" which is brick-colored concrete and "Renaissance Stone" which is pre-cast concrete need maintenance more often than buildings constructed with common brick or buildings with a brick facade and block structural wall. Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building. Renaissance stone and pre-cast concrete are difficult to seal, so we suggest covering these details with sheet metal or designing custom flashings to divert water and rain away from these materials.
