Since 1983 Wilmette has been know as a "Tree City" because of its has a well-developed
urban forest. The village parkways host more than 18,600 trees, including 150 species.
Before European settlers came to the Midwest, the Potawatomi tribe lived in the area. Wilmette is named for Archange and Antoine Ouilmette. Archange Chevallier, daughter of Pierese Chevallier, (French fur trader) and his Potawatomi wife, was one of the earliest residents of Chicago. She married Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader and who had eight children. As a condition of the Second Treaty of Prairie du Chien, the government awarded 1,280 acres in present-day Wilmette and Evanston to Ouilmette. In 1838, the Ouilmette family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where the Potawatomi had been relocated. After their parents' deaths, the children sold the entire reservation.
The Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad tracks were built in 1855 making the settlement of the North Shore possible. Several wealthy landowners decided to develop a community, and offered to build a station at their own expense if the railway would stop in Wilmette.
Wilmette was home to a variety of social and literary clubs, including the Wilmette Woman's Club, founded in 1891 as a philanthropic reading club and the Sunday Evening Supper Club, that hosted speakers like
William Jennings Bryan and
Jane Addams.
Sheridan Road opened in October 1900. This opened up the North Shore to automobiles, which tripled Wilmette's population. The postwar need for housing, led to a housing boom in the 1950s that turned farmland to subdivisions.
On January 5, 2002, the Olympic Torch passed through downtown Wilmette on its route from Chicago to Milwaukee during the 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay.
Wilmette is home to the Bahá'í House of Worship is presently the only one in the United States. It was named as one of the "Seven Wonders of Illinois" by the Illinois Bureau of Tourism in 2007. It is open seven days a week to visitors free of charge.
The First Congregational Church, built in 1909 is the oldest church in Wilmette. Trinity United Methodist Church, built in 1928 features stained glass windows by Willet Studios of Philadelphia, and Home Alone was filmed there. Wilmette has two Frank Lloyd Wright houses: the Frank J. Baker House and the Lewis Burleigh House.
Wilmette has three public beaches at Gilson Park, Langdon Park and Elmwood Dunes Preserve. Gilson Park also hosts a public theater, tennis courts and space to play beach volleyball and soccer. Gillson Park also has a marina and built-in grills throughout the park.

WickRight General Contracting offers excellent masonry, brick, block, split face block, concrete block, and stone services, as well as glass block repair services at reasonable prices in Wilmette. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate from an expert. If your masonry walls are cracking, you may need ventilation installed on your parapets to release moisture vapor. The capstones, metal copings or clay tiles on top of your parapet walls may be leaking, causing the parapet walls to become wet and leak into your home. The mortar in your masonry walls may need tuckpointing or re-pointing. Your building may have shifted and the expansion joints need to be repaired. Give us a call and have a building evaluation performed so you can keep your building dry and plan for any necessary repairs. We also repair and replace glass block.
All buildings require maintenance. Masonry buildings may seem to be maintenance free because they last for hundreds of years. But make no mistake, to remain issue-free, safe and dry, masonry buildings need maintenance. Every 30 years or so, historic masonry buildings need to have the mortar ground out of the mortar joints and re-pointed with lime mortar. Masonry buildings built after 1950 need maintenance every 20 years or so, depending on the craftsmanship. But masonry buildings built since 1990 need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" which is brick-colored concrete and "Renaissance Stone" which is pre-cast concrete need maintenance more often than buildings constructed with common brick or buildings with a brick facade and block structural wall. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete maintenance services at reasonable prices in Wilmette. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
Not all masonry buildings require sealant, but if you own a building built after 1990, chances are at least one wall is constructed with modern materials like split face block or jumbo block, the parapet walls may have be finished with capstones that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete or there are decorative details on the building that look like limestone, but are actually Renaissance Stone or pre-cast concrete. All of these modern materials are highly porous and prone to absorbing rain water which moves through these materials and into your building. If your Wilmette home is experiencing mysterious leaks, give WickRight General Contracting a call 312-720-1467. Your building may need parapet ventilation installed, custom flashings designed to divert bulk water and masonry sealant to help the mortar and the block resist moisture intrusion and wind driven rain. WickRight General Contracting installs masonry sealants, including clear sealants, like Chemtrete, Prosoco and various elastomeric paints, like Modac, sometimes called "plugger" paints.
Some masonry buildings built in Wilmette since 1990 are wet. These wet buildings need specialized services to mitigate water and moisture intrusion and to dry out. Buildings built with split face block and other modern masonry products like "jumbo brick" and "Renaissance Stone" need custom flashing and parapet ventilation to release moisture trapped in the building's walls and roof system. We recommend installing WickRight passive ventilation on buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block and Renaissance Stone or precast concrete. Buildings built with split face block, concrete block, jumbo block also need to be sealed with masonry sealant. Renaissance stone and pre-cast concrete are difficult to seal, so we suggest covering these details with sheet metal or designing custom flashings to divert water and rain away from these materials. WickRight General Contracting offers excellent split face block and pre-cast concrete repair services in Wilmette at reasonable prices. Call 312-720-1467 today for an estimate.
