Some Fun Facts About Des Plaines

The city of Des Plaines is situated on and is named after the Des Plaines River, which runs through it. In the 1600s French explorers named the river, which refers to the American Sycamore tree which is similar to the European "Plane" tree.

Prior to the European's arrival, Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa) inhabited the Des Plaines River Valley.

Des Plaines was the site of Ray Kroc's first McDonald's, which opened in 1955. The restaurant was demolished in 1984, and a replica was built on the site as a museum. The museum was demolished due to repeated flooding.

In July 2022, the third largest winning lotto ticket in US history for $1.34 billion was sold at a Speedway gas station in Des Plaines.

Parts of Des Plaines may be built over the "Des Plaines Disturbance", an area of sedimentary rock that is up-ended. This abnormality may have been caused by an meteorite. The crater is thought to be 75 to 200 feet beneath the town. The crater has been filled by glacial activity and no evidence of it remains at the surface.
