Around 1835, the first business in Belmont Cragin opened, a saloon, run by George Merral. His main customer were truck farmers delivering produce to Chicago, thus the area was called Whiskey Point.

The area remained rural until the 1880s when Cragin Brothers & Company moved a tin plate and sheet iron processing plant to the area. The railroad built a station to accommodate all the employees. Cragin also purchased a rivet company and moved machinery and workers from Connecticut to the community. Job opportunities and rail service spurred a housing boom and the name of the area became Cragin.

Railroad access attracted more factories and workers to Cragin. The Belt Railway Company extended its service into the area in 1883, and plants developed in the new neighborhoods of Hanson Park and Galewood. The clay soil in Galewood was superior to the clay found elsewhere, so The Western Brick and Tile Company opened a factory there. By 1891, Westinghouse, Church, Kerr & Company Iron Works, Pitts Agricultural Works Warehouse, and the Rice and Bullen Malting Company opened factories and warehouses which brought even more people to Cragin. Even more companies came to the area, including Zenith and Ecco. Builders built thousands of bungalows, cape cods, and two-flats to house area's workers.
