Hermosa is located on the northwest side of Chicago, and contains the Kelvyn Park and Hermosa neighborhoods.

Hermosa was settled by Europeans in the early 1880s, most were Scotch, German and Swedish. Today, Hermosa is a predominantly Hispanic community.

One of the first settlers was James F. Keeney, who owned most of the land that is now Hermosa. Keeney promoted the growth of Hermosa and convinced the railroad to make a stop, for which he built and paid for the station.

The first official name for the area was Garfield, in honor of President Garfield. In 1885 the name of the town was changed to Hermosa, which means beautiful in Spanish.

One of the more famous companies headquartered in Hermosa was the Schwinn Bicycle Company. Schwinn had facilities in Hermosa from 1895 to 1982. Nearly 63% of the homes in Hermosa were built before 1940.

Hermosa is the birthplace of Walt Disney, who was born on December 5, 1901. The house Disney was born in is located the corner of Tripp and Palmer Avenue and was designed and built by Elias Disney and Flora Call Disney, in 1893.

In 2018, the Hermosa Bungalow Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
